7 Fun Trunk-or-Treat Ideas With a Christian Twist

Featured

Is your church throwing a fall harvest festival or trick-or-treat alternative to Halloween? Celebrate the fall with "trunk or treat," a tailgate-like event that involves decorating the trunk of your car to celebrate the season!

Pumpkin spice lattes are out, the leaves are beginning to change colors, and it's increasingly feeling like sweater weather here in the United States. We're here to wake you up now that September's ended–hello, October!

Without needing to go door to door, many churches set up trunk-or-treats in their parking lot so kids can still get their candy fix from the array of decorated parked cars. Even better, you can easily turn it into a friendly competition that raises money for those living in poverty worldwide (for more information on church partnerships, click here ).

Trunk or treat activities are also easy to adapt for COVID-19 social distancing and safety measures. Especially since Halloween loves masks!

  • Set out treats in treat-bags inside the trunks, to avoid many hands reaching into a common bowl.
  • Designate walking traffic directions for the rows of cars.
  • Use on-line event software like SignUp Genius or Eventbrite to space out the crowd, to give everyone healthy room to move.
  • Bring lots of hand sanitizer! If you're part of the setup team, consider handing mini-bottles of sanitizer out at the entrance, or asking everyone to put some on their hands as they arrive.

Adding just a little healthy caution will keep the events fun and worry free. So, enjoy this Halloween — the first since World War II with a full moon!

Here are 7 creative trunk or treat ideas with a Christian twist, for starters:

Turn your hot wheels into the Wheel of Fortune's game show set up–everyone's favorite throwback. And what about changing the winning phrase into a Bible verse? Here are some of our favorite verses about God's heart.

Cookie Monsters of all ages will appreciate this fun twist on trunk or treat. C might stand for cookie… but according to a now-converted blue monster everyone knows and loves, Christ > cookies. Spell it out for fun–you are a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N, as your Sunday school teacher might say.

Alternatively, if you'd like to get cozy with a whale (or crawl in your trunk, AKA the "whale's stomach"), try pulling off your best Jonah. Where there's a whale, there's a way.

Perhaps you're more of a classic trunk-or-treater that loves to get in the fall spirit. A hayride and "trunk or treat" in one, this one's just a classic. Break out the fall leaves, pumpkins, and candles! After all, there's no time like the fall to bundle up with a cozy blanket… and your Bible.

Here's another fun idea. Noah's ark is an easy trunk or treat idea to recreate that involves the entire family. There's Noah, his family, and the entire animal kingdom to choose from! Bonus points if you have kids that already own animal-themed clothing. That's not to mention, the candy choice is also obvious: Skittles, so that everyone can "taste the rainbow."
